Venus Diamond® gains high marks in two clinical long-term studies

University of Brescia tests universal nanohybrid composite

Hanau, Germany, November, 2010 – Two recent in vivo studies at the University of Brescia (Italy) assessed the clinical and aesthetic performance of Venus Diamond® by Heraeus. The universal composite achieved consistently high marks at the two-year recall in both studies with regard to marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, anatomical form, secondary caries, colour matching ability and surface texture.

Venus Diamond enables dentists to produce extremely natural and durable restorations with little effort. With its innovative chemical formula – a patented monomer matrix and a balanced nanohybrid filler system – the universal composite combines in an unprecedented manner very low shrinkage stress with high strength and long-lasting natural aesthetics.

Split-mouth study on class V restorations

In a controlled randomised split-mouth study the Department of Restorative Dentistry of the University of Brescia assessed the clinical and aesthetic performance of Venus Diamond in class V restorations. The results were compared to a control group treated with another modern composite and adhesive material. Therefore, 60 class V restorations were placed, using Venus Diamond and Gluma Comfort Bond (both Heraeus) for the test group and Ceram X Duo and Prime & Bond NT (both Dentsply) for the control group. The fillings were evaluated according to USPHS (United States Public Health Service) and SQUACE (semi quantitative clinical evaluation) criteria, with A (alpha) standing for optimal, B (bravo) for clinically acceptable and C (charlie) and D (delta) for inacceptable results.

At the final re-evaluation after two years, recall rate was 100 percent. 95 percent of the Venus Diamond restorations and 88 percent of the control restorations were present. All evaluated teeth remained caries free and all fillings were intact. Every restoration kept its anatomical form. 92 percent of the Venus Diamond restorations and 85 percent of the control group were rated as smooth. The other surfaces were rated as slightly smooth. All study teeth were vital and sound. None of them exhibited postoperative discomfort. The patient satisfaction was accordingly in both groups 100 percent. All in all, Venus Diamond demonstrated a good clinical long-term behaviour in class V restorations after 24 months and performed slightly better than the control group in some categories.

Clinical evaluation of class III and IV restorations

A second in vivo study at the Department of Restorative Dentistry in Brescia evaluated the clinical and aesthetical performance of Venus Diamond in class III and IV cavities. Therefore, 24 class III and IV restorations were placed with Venus Diamond in micro-layering technique. Gluma Comfort Bond was used as adhesive. The fillings were evaluated according to USPHS and SQUACE criteria.

After two years, recall rate was 100 percent and all placed restorations were present. The fillings exhibited excellent aesthetic results: 82 percent were rated as alpha regarding colour match. 82 percent of the restoration surfaces were rated as smooth, the others as slightly smooth. A marks without exemption for marginal discolouration and 90 percent A marks for marginal adaptation testify to the good marginal properties of Venus Diamond. All restaurations kept their anatomical form. No restoration showed fracture, loss of retention or of interproximal contacts. All teeth were caries free, vital and sound and all patients satisfied. On the whole, Venus Diamond demonstrated a good clinical and aesthetic performance after 24 months in anterior class III and IV restorations.

Conclusion: excellent long-term performance and easy use

Principal investigator Professor Antonio Cerutti, Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Brescia, not only testified the excellent aesthetic and clinical behaviour of Venus Diamond in the two studies. He also commended the outstanding handling and polishing abilities of the universal nanohybrid composite.
